Text messages have a 98% open rate, while email has only a 20% open rate.
If your nonprofit has not embraced SMS messaging, now is a good time to start! What is SMS? Simple Message System enables text messages to be sent to mobile devices. Bulk SMS messaging is a great way to cultivate volunteer participation, send a direct link to a donation page, send day-of reminder to event attendees, and send program and project status updates and even send surveys.
The important considerations for SMS messaging are to limit frequency and keep your messages short and powerful with a link to your website, volunteer signup page or donation page when possible. At a minimum an SMS message should not be a boring push notification. Make it a vibrant, interactive message that recipients will like to receive.
If you are a nonprofit organization using the Salesforce Non Profit Success Pack and/or Salesforce Service Cloud you can easily add an app, usually discounted for nonprofits, from the app exchange that will not only send a bulk SMS message but also track the results.
While SMS messaging should not entirely replace your email marketing, it certainly is a tool that can be used in conjunction with your marketing campaigns to raise awareness of your programs and organization, cultivate donations, and provide greater response to surveys and polls to assist with strategic management, program outcomes analysis and improve services that you provide.
